Goodbye Eluthera and on to Exumas
Sue and I finish up or solo time in Eluthera and pick up new friends in Nassau
It was time to move on from Governor's Harbour and finish up Eluthera as we had friends to meet in Nassau. We spent a day in Palmetto Point which had amazing beaches and we ran into friends again from "A Ten". One of the fun parts of cruising is meeting other sailors, exchanging stories and building friendships as we follow similar paths. We then made it to Rock Sound which is at the bottom of Eluthera and a huge harbour with lots of boats. We did a hike to the Cathedral Caves where we saw amazing limestone caves (with lots of bats flying around) where tree roots have grown through the roof all the way down to the ground. All the Bahamas islands are made of limestone that was pushed up from the ocean floor over millions of years. The result is a very flat set of islands with lots of caves, jagged landscape, blue holes and tough growing conditions. We made our way to Cape Eluthera which is a staging point for our crossing to Nassau. Cape Eluthera is a resort owned by the Amway family. It was this beautiful resort with villas on the beach and buildings all around the harbour but Sue and I had it pretty much to ourselves. We only saw one other group. It made for a special Valentine's dinner where we had the entire restaurant to ourselves! We had a smooth 8 hour crossing to Nassau where we stayed at the Palm Cay Marina. The highlight of the trip was the Mahi Mahi we finally managed to catch and the amazing fresh fish dinner we had that evening. It was a bit of a shock to be back in a busy city and huge marina full of boats after the slow pace of the last few weeks. Ric, Laurie and their son (he joined a few days later) are joining us for the next few weeks as we cruise the Exumas. Groceries and produce are not easy to find as you travel the islands so when in a larger city we always do a huge shop to stock up on supplies and rum! We were full of fuel, food and friends and were ready to head off the our next adventure the beautiful Exuma chain of islands. I will update that part of our trip where we ran into Space X employees getting ready for a Falcon rocket booster recovery (which we hope to see) and our time in Exuma Land and Sea Park.
