Exploring Eluthera
We explore North Eluthera with our friends
We have arrived at Eluthera Island. This is a large narrow island south of the Abaco chain. We landed at Egg Island after our 10 hour ocean passage from the Abacos. After an evening there, we headed to Spanish Wells. This is a commercial hub where 75% of the Bahamas lobster comes from. It is a good spot for us to provision as grocery stores are not easy to find and very expensive. It was interesting however that I could get a bag of Lays chips here for less than I paid in the US. Our next destination was Harbour Island - this is an island known for it's pink sand beach and many celebrities that vacation here (Taylor Swift was here a few weeks ago and Ryan Reynolds was on the Island when we were there). To get to Harbour Island you need to sail through a very narrow, passage surrounded by reef and swell from the ocean - it is named Devil's Backbone for good reason. We elected to hire a guide, Little Woody, who took us through. He spend the 2 hours of our trip telling us story after story of all the people he has escorted - The Obama's, Michael Jordan, Scotty Pippin, Joe Montana, and the list went on. We spent 2 days on Harbour Island where we rented a golf card to explore the island and spend a day at the most amazing beach I have ever been to - Pink Sand Beach, powder sand, and a sandbar that went out what seemed like forever. I can see why it is rated the best beach in the world. We dropped of Carla and Scott at the airport dock and then Sue and I headed off on our own for the first time! We managed to make our way through Devils backbone ourselves before heading through "Current Cut" which is a narrow cut in rock between 2 islands with very fast current and lots of sandbar / reef to avoid. I am writing to you now from the Glass Window bridge. This is a bridge over the narrowest piece of land in the world. If you look at the drone shot below you can see that it has moved as a result of the storm surge from Hurricane Betsy. We ended the day in "The Queens Hot Tub". This is a series of natural ponds that get filled up at high tide when the waves crash over the rocks. It is a must see if you ever make it here.
